Helping Your Child at Home

Please read daily with your child and help them to practice their spellings daily. Make homework fun by completing activities together. Try to help your child to become independent in organising themselves for school. Most importantly talk to your children about what they are learning and how they are learning in class.

End of Year Expectations

Our learning this term:

This term we will be focusing mainly on fiction writing. We will be writing our own adventure stories about aliens! We will be looking closely at editing and revising our work in order to improve the quality. In addition, we will explore the features of these types of writing and look at structure and SPaG as we go, including using commas to make a list, a range of suffixes and apostrophes for omission and posession. We will also explore our topic work through non-fiction writing. The Great Fire of London should make for some exciting newspaper reports!

Please encourage your children when writing at home to use their best handwriting and good spelling, punctuation and grammar to ensure we are always practicing these skills whenever we write. The more we practise, the easier it gets!

All children in Key Stage One complete a daily guided reading or phonics session, where activities vary according to our needs. Some of these activities are, for example, listening to an audio book, silent reading or reading comprehension.

Thanks to our very valuable volunteer readers, we aim for all children to be heard read every day where possible. Please can you ensure your child brings their reading diary into school every day, so we can record in it when we read with them at school.

This term, we are focusing on place value, addition and subtraction. We have been beginning to use blank number lines to solve our problems and jumps of 100, 10 and 1. We will also look at telling the time and measuring with a focus on capacity and length before half term. In the lead up to Easter, we will also cover 2D and 3D shape and multiplication and division. We will also begin looking at fractions of amounts and shapes. w

Our Science this term is investigation the use of forces within the circus. The children have been experimenting with balance, push, pull and mass.  We will also begin to learn about animals with links to the circus and their natural habitats, eating habits and key features.

Our topic this term is To Infinity and Beyond! Throughout the next 12 weeks, we will be using our imaginary telescopes to zoom in and out of our planet and solar system. We will be looking closely at the UK, London, China and outer space!

Physical Education (PE)

Key Stage One will be having P.E on Friday afternoons with Mr Ramshaw and Mr Piper, and Forest School Thursday afternoons with Mrs Field. Children who are not attending Forest School will still require a PE kit on these days as School activities will vary. Please make sure your child brings their P.E kit and Forest School kit into school especially on these days, but it is also helpful to have them the rest of the week, in case we do any extra unexpected P.E!

Religious Education (RE)

Key Stage One will be learning about leaders and who they should follow. We will learn the story of Moses and discover the importance of Christian festivals by looking at Harvest Festival, The Gunpowder Plot and Christmas.

We follow the Letter Join handwriting scheme. For more information about this and about what your child will be learning throughout the year follow the link below. You will also find detail of how to log in and practice this at home. Handwriting is a very important skill so any practice at home would be greatly appreciated!

Your child's homework is to read to an adult daily and have a comment written in their reading record. They must also practice their spellings daily in one of the ways suggested in their homework folder or any other creative way they can think of. Finally, they must practice their number bonds and 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables daily. They can do this orally, using Times Tables Rockstars or one of the other suggested websites on this page. Any other homework is communicated via the homework folders. There will be tasks as necessary and the hand in dates for these will be clearly communicated on these sheets, as well as Parent Mailed where possible.
